Will the numbers cover up existing footer text?

They are drawn on top of whatever is already there, so on a page with an existing footer they can overlap. Choose a position the document leaves empty — if the original has a centred footer, put the numbers on the right.

Can I start numbering at something other than 1?

Yes. Set the starting number to continue from a previous volume, or set it higher so that a two-page cover is skipped in the visible sequence.

Can I remove the numbers later?

Not with this tool — once drawn, they are part of the page content. Keep your unnumbered original if you may need to renumber after editing the document.
